Our generation has a very different idea of a government job. We think it'll involve working from 9 to 5, wearing a crisp white shirt with grey trousers, and sitting in a plain office with yellow walls with boring stuff to do. But that’s not true. Our approach on government jobs hasn’t changed in years. But it’s time to look at them differently.

Take a look at the following 11 jobs and you’ll know what we are talking about.

1. RAW Agent

Salman Khan

Being a RAW agent is undoubtedly the most exciting government job. As a kid, we all have been inspired by James Bond, haven’t we? Of course, going to another country, faking an identity can be quite risky, but it does not reduce the adventure associated with the profession.

2. Indian Foreign Services Officer

Nirupama Rao

Most of us think we’ll have to study a lot to become an IFS officer, which is absolutely true. But getting into the foreign services will get you several foreign trips and probably to places you won’t get to go to otherwise. And you’ll have a white passport. Think about that!

3. An archaeologist with ASI

Archaeology

Archaeology remains unpopular to this day. People often call it an ‘academic career.’ But you get to drown yourself in history, architecture and culture, all of it together. According to us, there can’t be a profession as stimulating as this.

4. ISRO scientist

ISRO

We think ISRO scientists are constantly behind their computers (probably not as good as macbooks) and are trying to fix something space-like or the other. That’s not true. ISRO scientists are constantly pursuing space research and have ventured into satellites, and planetary missions. Of course, it demands a lot of hard work, but the results are as fruitful.

5. Customs officer

There’s more to customs officers than crisp white uniforms. You get to catch smugglers and the smuggled goods. What else can be more exciting?

6. Tourist guide

It might sound boring to narrate the same anecdotes again and again. But you get to meet so many new people that it makes up for that. That travel guide you hired at Jaipur, probably has more friends and contacts than you do.

7. Defence services

Shahid Kapur

You could be an officer with the Indian Army or Navy, a pilot with the Indian Air Force, or even choose to be a coast guard. Come on, flying the fastest jet plane in the world is definitely mind-blowing. These jobs are certainly among the most dangerous in the world, but it comes with several perks like personal residence, medical facilities, travel passes, and pensions after retirement. But the best thing about it is that it’s the best way to serve the nation.

8. University Professor

Azim Premji class

We think teaching is a boring profession, where all you have to do is teach students, and check exam papers. We often forget that it’s a career where you are constantly learning, experimenting and growing as a person.

9. Forest range officer

Forest

Let’s be honest, most of us don’t even know what a forest officer does. A forest officer is responsible for the forests, wildlife, and environment within a state or union territory of India. What makes this job thrilling is the fact that you get to live amidst the greenery, you soak in fresh air and you’re right in the middle of nature. Definitely a win-win.

10. Public relations officer

PRO

PR doesn’t sound exciting? Well, handling public relations for the government is interesting. You get to work on magazines, videos, brochures, e-magazines and much more for the government and you’re entitled to all the perks of a government job. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

11. Railway Engineer

Railway engineers don’t only go and fix railway engines and tracks. They visit railway tracks in different towns, villages and cities and fix them. They travel to the most interesting areas, the most remote places and that in itself is exhilarating.
